Tuesday 18th February

With fine weather in prospect we set out to walk up the Allt a Mhuilinn valley to the Mountain Rescue Post and hut to the North of the summit of Ben Nevis.

Lochan Coire o na Ciste -from the hut, our route of ascent was to be the ' Ledge Route' up the right hand ridge in this photo.

Having reached snow ( at last!) we fitted our crampons and roped in groups of 3 we began to make our way up the slope.
For most of us this was our first experience of climbing with ropes and it proved to be 'interesting'.  We began to learn some very basic lessons in working as a team, moving in unison and 'looking out' for each other.
Eventually the top of Carn Dearg was in sight.

A welcome brief rest was enjoyed at the top.

The summit was now clearly in reach although a further 2km walk and 120m ascent would be necessary.
Above is a view of Carn Dearg (to the North West) from the summit of Ben Nevis, the right hand ridge being our route of ascent .
Our descent involved retracing our steps and then descending the steep slope down Red gully  to Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe.
